Since 1 September 2018, a beak-trimming ban has been in force for poultry. This results in chickens injuring each other when pecking. Gypsum blocks that they can peck are used to distract them. These blocks are a waste product of construction materials and are not checked for harmful substances. Together with a customer, TROMP has developed a pecking block from water-main granules released in the softening of drinking water. These are compressed, resulting in a pecking block based on lime instead of gypsum. The magnesium in the pecking block has a calming effect. The water-main granules have been checked and do not contain any harmful substances for the chickens. An additional advantage is that these pecking blocks are good for digestion, as a chicken needs small stones in its stomach for digestion. These circularly produced long-lasting pecking blocks are available under the name TokBlock.
